A guide to how Plumbline can help future proof bathroom designs in the retirement living and aged care sector.

As baby boomers ease into their retirement years in large numbers and begin utilising residential aged care accommodation, many will demand greater lifestyle amenities not typically associated with this sector. With the baby boomer generation typically asset-rich thanks to the value of their residential property and superannuation funds, they'll both expect and be able to fund a standard of living that they have come accustomed to in other aspects of their life.

This presents many opportunities for designers, architects and decision-makers involved in the design of physical environments for older New Zealanders to design bathroom products and spaces that are safer, more inclusive and contribute to the overall wellbeing of all New Zealanders.

Plumbline's range of assistive products considers both the functional and aesthetic desires of potential residents; from grab rails and personalised storage solutions, to sensor activated tapware and intelligent toilets. This guide will showcase how you can create aged care bathrooms of the future for the next generation of older New Zealanders.

Ease of Use

With mobility being reduced as we age, it is important that all elements in the bathroom are easy to use and future proofed for if and when an older person needs change.

On Trend Design

The new generation of retirement residents have enjoyed unparalleled access to great design, along with the experience of different cultures through travel. They want their next home to reflect how they see themselves.

Storage

Many retirees are downsizing when shifting into a retirement village or rest home and they may be concerned about storage. From shampoo and soap in the shower, to pills, potions and spare towels, storage room is at a premium.

Technology

The baby boomers are familiar with and frequent users of technology. Investing in emerging technology will be a key area for aged care providers to reducing costs while still meeting the needs of those in their care.

Intelligent Toilets

Intelligent toilets are getting smarter and sleeker, with exceptional functions and minimalist design. The Axent. One brings together all of these elements to create a luxury product that will truly benefit the quality of life and self-care for older people. The Wall Hung version can be installed at a comfortable height to make navigating the bathroom easier for those with limited mobility.

Showers

Creating a more user-friendly shower experience is essential to maintaining some independence for elderly residents. Shelving or a tiled niche is a good inclusion so all necessary items are easily reached whilst using the shower. Install an easy to use ‘push to change’ multi-function shower with spray patterns to suit different needs, like the Como Round Slide Shower, with its trend setting style and function.

Vanities

Drawer vanities are a more practical solution to aged care bathrooms, as they allow easy access to the back of the unit, avoiding bending and having to pull out everything to find items. The Progetto vanity range offers extensive style and finish options. Consider a two drawer vanity where budget allows, for extra space. Think about using a wide handle on the vanity for easy grip.

Mirror Cabinets

A mirror cabinet is a great place for storage of medicines and other necessaries. Most mirror cabinets are available in finishes to match vanity units and can be recessed into the wall cavity for completely hidden look. Whilst often mirror cabinets are installed in similar dimensions to the vanity, if you have extra wall space consider installing a larger mirror cabinet to provide more storage and magnify the feeling of spaciousness in the bathroom.

Wall Towers

Maximise storage while saving floor space by using a wall mounted vertical storage cabinet.
They can provide excellent linen and other storage space and come in a large range of styles and finishes to match vanities

Tapware

Single lever mixer’s are best for both basins and showers for ease of use. A flatter handle is friendlier to grip but that does not mean you need to compromise on style. Many of our tapware ranges are available in different colours, to add a touch of design flair. In some areas sensor activated tapware is worth specifying to reduce water consumption and importantly maintain high standards of hygiene.

Lighting

Good lighting adds atmosphere to a bathroom as well as making daily tasks easier. Along with ceiling lighting, it is a great idea to add task specific lighting near the basin. Lights attached to or immediately above the mirror workwell, or you could consider an LED mirror for additional light.

Accessories

Thoughtful placement of accessories such as towel rails, robe hooks and toilet roll holders will ensure the bathroom is easy to use for all. You may need to have a separate hand towel rail nearer the basin whilst the heated towel rails are closer to the shower. A stylish grab rail is a great addition near the toilet. These are also available in multiple finishes to fit in with the look and feel of the rest of the bathroom.
Grab bars that double as towel racks are ideal for smaller spaces and can provide extra security.

Dementia Needs

Colour distinction is important for dementia facilities. Along with toilet seats in a contrasting colour, it is important to clearly identify hot and cold water. Separate controls for each are recommended and in many cases larger red and blue indicators can be specified to aid in recognition.
